Magnet Experiments
We've been playing with the differences between Fe3O4(Iron(II,III) oxide or magnetite) and Fe2O3(Iron(III) Oxide)
Fe3O4 + tri-flow = ferrofluid:
We mixed in some epoxy, and let it dry.
- This is what resulted: Image
- So, you can get semi-permanent ferrofluid sculptures. They're just a bit fragile.
- Update: It broke and made a mess.
Fe2O3 + silly putty
- Not magnetic.
Fe3O4 + silly putty
- Magnetic, but application of a strong magnetic field did not cause the putty to be magnetized.
